In this post i will show you laravel 8 user role and permission with example, here we will see how to set user role and permission in laravel,
we are using spatie github package for roles and permissions in laravel 8 application, Spatie role permission composer package provide way to create acl in laravel 8. spatie provide how to assign role to user, permission and how to assign permission assign to roles. So, here we will see step by step creating roles and permissions in laravel 8 application.
In this tutorial we will see how we can implement user roles and permissions system in laravel from scratch.
Step 1: Install Laravel 8 for user role and permission example
Step 2: Create Authentication
Step 3: Install Composer Packages
Step 4: Create Product Migration
Step 5: Create Models
Step 6: Add Middleware
Step 7: Create Routes
Step 8: Add Controllers
Step 9: Create Blade File
Step 10: Create Seeder For Permissions and AdminUser
Step 1: Install Laravel 8 for user role and permission example
Create new laravel app if require.
composer create-project --prefer-dist laravel/laravel blog
Step 2: Create Authentication
Now,we need to generate auth scaffolding in laravel 8 using laravel ui command.
composer require laravel/ui
php artisan ui bootstrap --auth
now install npm and run dev for better ui result.
npm install
npm run dev
Step 3: Install Composer Packages
Now we will install Spatie package for ACL and form collection package.
composer require spatie/laravel-permission
composer require laravelcollective/html
After that open config/app.php file and add service provider and aliase.
'providers' => [
....
Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider::class,
],
Now, publish this package as below.
php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider"
Now you can see permission.php file and one migrations. so we need to run migration using following command:
php artisan migrate
Step 4: Create Product Migration
Create migration for products table.
php artisan make:migration create_products_table
Edit products table as below
<?php
use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Schema;
use Illuminate\Database\Schema\Blueprint;
use Illuminate\Database\Migrations\Migration;
class CreateProductsTable extends Migration
{
public function up()
{
Schema::create('products', function (Blueprint $table) {
$table->id();
$table->string('name');
$table->text('detail');
$table->timestamps();
});
}
public function down()
{
Schema::dropIfExists('products');
}
}
php artisan migrate
Step 5: Create Models
Now, create app/Models/User.php
<?php
namespace App\Models;
use Illuminate\Contracts\Auth\MustVerifyEmail;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Foundation\Auth\User as Authenticatable;
use Illuminate\Notifications\Notifiable;
use Spatie\Permission\Traits\HasRoles;
class User extends Authenticatable
{
use HasFactory, Notifiable, HasRoles;
protected $fillable = [
'name',
'email',
'password',
];
protected $hidden = [
'password',
'remember_token',
];
protected $casts = [
'email_verified_at' => 'datetime',
];
}
after that create app/Models/Product.php
<?php
namespace App\Models;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Model;
class Product extends Model
{
use HasFactory;
protected $fillable = [
'name', 'detail'
];
}
Step 6: Add Middleware
Spatie package provide it's in-built middleware, add middleware in Kernel.php file
protected $routeMiddleware = [
....
'role' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleMiddleware::class,
'permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\PermissionMiddleware::class,
'role_or_permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleOrPermissionMiddleware::class,
]
Step 7: Create Routes
Add code in routes/web.php
<?php
use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Route;
use App\Http\Controllers\HomeController;
use App\Http\Controllers\RoleController;
use App\Http\Controllers\UserController;
use App\Http\Controllers\ProductController;
Route::get('/', function () {
return view('welcome');
});
Auth::routes();
Route::get('/home', [HomeController::class, 'index'])->name('home');
Route::group(['middleware' => ['auth']], function() {
Route::resource('roles', RoleController::class);
Route::resource('users', UserController::class);
Route::resource('products', ProductController::class);
});
Step 8: Add Controllers
Now create controller
1) app/Http/Controllers/UserController.php
<?php
namespace App\Http\Controllers;
use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\Http\Controllers\Controller;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use DB;
use Hash;
use Illuminate\Support\Arr;
class UserController extends Controller
{
/**
* Display a listing of the resource.
*
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function index(Request $request)
{
$data = User::orderBy('id','DESC')->paginate(5);
return view('users.index',compact('data'))
->with('i', ($request->input('page', 1) - 1) * 5);
}
/**
* Show the form for creating a new resource.
*
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function create()
{
$roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
return view('users.create',compact('roles'));
}
/**
* Store a newly created resource in storage.
*
* @param \Illuminate\Http\Request $request
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function store(Request $request)
{
$this->validate($request, [
'name' => 'required',
'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email',
'password' => 'required|same:confirm-password',
'roles' => 'required'
]);
$input = $request->all();
$input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);
$user = User::create($input);
$user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));
return redirect()->route('users.index')
->with('success','User created successfully');
}
/**
* Display the specified resource.
*
* @param int $id
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function show($id)
{
$user = User::find($id);
return view('users.show',compact('user'));
}
/**
* Show the form for editing the specified resource.
*
* @param int $id
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function edit($id)
{
$user = User::find($id);
$roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
$userRole = $user->roles->pluck('name','name')->all();
return view('users.edit',compact('user','roles','userRole'));
}
/**
* Update the specified resource in storage.
*
* @param \Illuminate\Http\Request $request
* @param int $id
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function update(Request $request, $id)
{
$this->validate($request, [
'name' => 'required',
'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email,'.$id,
'password' => 'same:confirm-password',
'roles' => 'required'
]);
$input = $request->all();
if(!empty($input['password'])){
$input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);
}else{
$input = Arr::except($input,array('password'));
}
$user = User::find($id);
$user->update($input);
DB::table('model_has_roles')->where('model_id',$id)->delete();
$user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));
return redirect()->route('users.index')
->with('success','User updated successfully');
}
/**
* Remove the specified resource from storage.

*/
public function destroy($id)
{
User::find($id)->delete();
return redirect()->route('users.index')
->with('success','User deleted successfully');
}
}
2) app/Http/Controllers/ProductController.php
<?php
namespace App\Http\Controllers;

Step 9 : Create Blade File
1) For Theme Layout we will create app.blade.php
2) For Users Module we will create index.blade.php, create.blade.php, edit.blade.php, show.blade.php
3) For Roles Module we will create index.blade.php, create.blade.php, edit.blade.php, show.blade.php
4) For Product Module we will create index.blade.php, create.blade.php, edit.blade.php, show.blade.php

Step 10: Create Seeder For Permissions and AdminUser
We will add seeder for permission
1.role-list
2.role-create
3.role-edit
4.role-delete
5.product-list
6.product-create
7.product-edit
8.product-delete
Now, run below command
php artisan make:seeder PermissionTableSeeder
Now, copy code in this database/seeds/PermissionTableSeeder.php file as below.
<?php
namespace Database\Seeders;
use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;
class PermissionTableSeeder extends Seeder
{
/**
* Run the database seeds.
*
* @return void
*/
public function run()
{
$permissions = [
'role-list',
'role-create',
'role-edit',
'role-delete',
'product-list',
'product-create',
'product-edit',
'product-delete'
];
foreach ($permissions as $permission) {
Permission::create(['name' => $permission]);
}
}
}
Now,run below command in your terminal
php artisan db:seed --class=PermissionTableSeeder
Now, create new seeder for creating admin user.
php artisan make:seeder CreateAdminUserSeeder
Now , copy below code database/seeds/CreateAdminUserSeeder.php in this file.
<?php
namespace Database\Seeders;
use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;
class CreateAdminUserSeeder extends Seeder
{
/**
* Run the database seeds.
*
* @return void
*/
public function run()
{
$user = User::create([
'name' => 'websolutionstuff',
'email' => '[email protected]',
'password' => bcrypt('12345678')
]);
$role = Role::create(['name' => 'Admin']);
$permissions = Permission::pluck('id','id')->all();
$role->syncPermissions($permissions);
$user->assignRole([$role->id]);
}
}
Run below command in your terminal.
php artisan db:seed --class=CreateAdminUserSeeder
Finally we have done with our code and it's time to run so, run this example.
